How to use
The big number at the top is the public IP address your traffic arrives from. Your computer does not know this address: the one you see in ipconfig or ifconfig is usually a private address such as 192.168.0.12, handed out by your own router. To learn the public one, something outside your network has to tell you. This page asks our server, which reads the source address of your connection and sends it straight back. Nothing else about the request is examined.
An IP address says less about you than people assume, and more than is comfortable. It reliably identifies your internet provider and, through public geolocation databases, a rough location — usually the city or the region, sometimes only the country, and quite often the city where your provider terminates traffic rather than where you are sitting. It does not carry your name, your address or your browsing history. Only your provider can connect the address to a subscriber, and in most countries that link requires a legal request. On mobile networks and on providers using carrier-grade NAT, thousands of customers share one address at the same time, so it identifies a pipe rather than a person.
Two versions are in use. IPv4 addresses look like 203.0.113.7 and have run out, which is why so much sharing goes on. IPv6 addresses look like 2001:db8::1 and are plentiful enough to give every device its own. If you see an IPv6 address here, your connection preferred IPv6 for this request; the same machine often still has a working IPv4 address for sites that need one. Home addresses also change: many providers hand out a new one after a reconnection or every day or two, so an address you noted last week may now belong to a neighbour.
Everything below the address comes from your browser and never touches the server. Your user agent string, screen and window size, time zone and preferred language are sent, or made readable, by every ordinary web page you open. Individually they are harmless; combined, they form a fingerprint that is often unique enough to recognise you across sites without any cookie. Seeing your own values written out is the quickest way to understand what a tracking script has to work with.
